La Botica de la Tierra
The Apothecary of the Land/The Apothecary of the Earth
La Botica de la Tierra is a diversified agricultural model with three main components
Agricultural production of high nutritional value and raw material in life sustaining agroforestry systems through regenerative practices with a focus on work for propagation, establishment and management of test crops for seed production and climate resilience. Over the years we have expanded the space dedicated to composting processes, where we strive to produce scientifically proven material to meet the needs of our farms as well as for distribution to the community.
Our educational programming ranges from soil improvement and agroforestry design and clean animal husbandry in the tropics to workshops on nutritional products and fermented inputs, as well as the elaboration of value-added products with safe technological processing techniques.
This third component is the heart and soul of our project. Our conservationist vision establishes the ethical principles that guide us in our resource planning and management, as well as in our day-to-day work. As a model focused on the responsible management of our resources, La Botica de la Tierra prioritizes regenerative practices that protect and promote our biodiversity as a principle of sustainable economic dynamics.
Since our arrival in Cabo Rojo in 2017, working for our local community has been the priority. The process has slowly and organically evolved from getting to know and establishing reciprocal relationships with our neighbors, which led us to better understand their needs and identify how La Botica de la Tierra could contribute to access and improving the quality of life for our people. Our efforts have taken many forms, from seed and produce exchanges, distributing tools and nutritious food after weather events, sharing renewable energy resources and our volunteers to lend a hand to our elders for the establishment of a spay and neuter program – in which, in 2023 alone, 17 community cats were spayed or neutered to improve living conditions for all. We are currently in the process of building our commercial kitchen that will run on renewable energy and provide us with the space to adequately respond to weather events through access to regenerative and nutritious food produced by the community and for the community.
