Frequently Asked Questions

Our center is affiliated to the Islands and Remote Areas region of the USDA’s Regional Food Business Centers program, which includes Hawaii, Alaska, North Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam and US Virgin Islands.

The Alliance for Agriculture runs the Puerto Rico Regional Food Business Center under a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), administered by the Hawaii Good Food Alliance y Virgin Islands Good Food Coalition.

Puerto Rico and these places share challenges such as geographic isolation, logistical difficulties in transporting food, underdeveloped infrastructure, extreme impacts of climate change, and our colonial backgrounds. We also share legal issues that create a complex set of barriers to building resilient regional and local food systems and economies.

Each Center supports a food system that responds to the best interests of its local communities, reflects culture, and respects the history and circumstances specific to its place. Our Center focuses on building permanent capacity in six areas: procurement, value addition, distribution, market development and access to finance. We accomplish this through the implementation of three programs: coordination and networking; technical assistance of various types; and training through grants. These services are offered in collaboration with expert partners.
